The midterm elections ended as a bittersweet affair, but hey, at least we've got Guy Fieri.

Especially now the revered TV chef has declared he'll spend another term as mayor of Flavortown, which sounds like good place to hide from everything right now.

"Thanks to the hard working community members of Flavortown. It was a delicious campaign and we are rollin out for another 4 years," he tweeted on Wednesday.

Four more years! Four more years!

But perhaps Fieri's celebrations are too early.

OK, if you're a bit lost on the concept of Flavortown, it's a phrase that Fieri has been spurting out throughout the years on his various TV shows.

But now the phrase has evolved into a state of mind, a fictional place where flavor reigns supreme. As Fieri explained to Munchies last year:(opens in a new tab)

"On camera, I once said, 'This pizza looks like a manhole cover in Flavortown.' Willy Wonka had a chocolate stream, you know? So it's taking these iconic food items, these iconic food moments, and giving them a home. They all live in Flavortown. It's like one of those things in The Matrix: You can only get down with Flavortown if you believe in Flavortown. I have people walk up to me and say, 'Hey, I'm a citizen of Flavortown.' I have people that want to pledge to be a city council member of Flavortown or the mechanic. It doesn't stop. What would be the airline of Flavortown? Sausage Airlines? It just doesn't stop. I just said it, and then people heard it. Of course, there's no Flavortown—unless you believe in it."

The internet made sooooo many jokes about Trumps fake news trophy tweet

Perhaps the biggest bummer about Twitter's new 280-character limit is that it allows the current president to compose tweets like this one:

On Monday morning, President Donald Trump hit Twitter to suggest a "FAKE NEWS TROPHY" for whichever news network he deems produces "the most dishonest, corrupt" coverage of his presidency. As usual, Fox was excluded from Trump's media rage.

In the same tweet, Trump referred to himself as the American people's favorite president with a parenthetical "(me)." According the most recent Gallup(opens in a new tab) poll, the self-described "favorite" president's approval rating currently sits at 37 percent.

Naturally the internet jumped all over Trump's first tweet of the day. Some even have a solid suggestion for Trump's proposed "FAKE NEWS TROPHY":

Project Entrepreneur expands accelerator program to help more women entrepreneurs build scalable companies

    (图1)

Since launching in 2015, Project Entrepreneur(opens in a new tab) — a media partner of Mashable — has trained more than 1,200 aspiring entrepreneurs representing 131 U.S. cities. Its annual venture competition has yielded an alumnae community of nearly 400 women entrepreneurs, with the 2016 finalists reporting $10+ million raised in seed and pre-seed funding.

Now entering its third year, Project Entrepreneur (PE) — an initiative from the Rent the Runway Foundation and UBS Elevating Entrepreneurs(opens in a new tab) — is expanding the number of winning companies in the accelerator from three to five.

“We are so excited to continue working with UBS in providing women with the tools they need to create high-growth companies, and see their visions through,” said Jennifer Hyman, CEO and Co-Founder of Rent the Runway. “Past participants in our accelerator continue to inspire us with their incredible progress, including closing rounds of funding. We are eager to provide the next class of talented female founders with the tools and support they need to scale, and to see the disruption their companies bring to various different industries.”

PE's annual venture competition is open to female founders who are in the prototype or beta stages, have their first paying customers, or are generating revenue. The top 200 applicants will be invited to attend the PE Intensive in New York City on April 13-14, 2018, a free two-day event comprised of in-depth workshops, expert speakers and a pitch competition. The five winning founders will each receive a $10,000 grant, a spot in the five-week accelerator program at Rent the Runway’s New York office and mentorship and engagement with UBS executives, entrepreneurs, and investors. Founders interested can apply online(opens in a new tab); but don’t wait, as the deadline is December 1st!

Last year’s winning companies included: New York-based LOLI Beauty(opens in a new tab), the first BIY (Blend It Yourself) clean and green beauty brand; Scottsdale-based The Touchpoint Solution(opens in a new tab), a neuroscience wearable that alleviates stress by altering the body’s stress response in as little as 30 seconds; and San Francisco-based Lace & Liberty(opens in a new tab), merging direct-to-consumer convenience with luxury bespoke bridalwear. Two additional New York-based companies were hosted by The Knot/XO Group Co-Founder Carley Roney and designer Rebecca Minkoff: Repeat Roses(opens in a new tab), a sustainable floral waste removal business that gives back to people and planet, and Reboundwear(opens in a new tab), athleisure wear with a purpose, respectively.

    (图2)

“The caliber of companies we're seeing through Project Entrepreneur further validates what we've always believed — that there is an incredible population of talented female founders in cities and towns across the country,” said Lori Feinsilver, UBS Head of Community Affairs & Corporate Responsibility, Americas. “Being able to reach these women and provide them with access to resources and support that will help fuel their growth gives us confidence that we can indeed level the playing field.”

  • Two people trying to run the same government agency makes for a really awkward first day

Two people trying to run the same government agency makes for a really awkward first day

    (图1)

Revolutionaries, take note -- if you're planning a government takeover, please use high quality breakfast pastries.

That's a lesson that White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney(opens in a new tab) apparently hadn't learned when he stepped into the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau today. He was there to take on an additional job as the agency's director.

The only problem? The agency's acting director, Leandra English, refused to cede it to him, in the workplace drama of the decade.

As a Trump appointee, Mulvaney wasn't exactly welcomed at at the job, so he brought crappy Dunkin' Donuts as a way to "ease" himself into an agency he's expected to destroy.

SEE ALSO: Sorry, Cards Against Humanity can't stop Trump's wall

On Friday, Director Richard Cordray(opens in a new tab) stepped down, leaving English to serve as acting director. Last night, English filed a lawsuit claiming that she is the "rightful acting director" of the agency. English has asked the court to impose a temporary restraining order to prevent Trump from appointing anyone, arguing that she is entitled to her position under the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Law(opens in a new tab).

None of that stopped Mulvaney. On Monday, the Budget Director stepped into the CFPB, ready to take on his new job.

This is how English responded in an email sent to 1,600 staff.

"I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. With Thanksgiving in mind, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude to all of you for your service,” English said(opens in a new tab), signing the note with her title, "Acting Director."

And that, my friends, is what we call a death drop.

Via Giphy(opens in a new tab)

    Here's how Mulvaney responded:

“Please disregard any instructions you receive from Ms. English in her presumed capacity as acting director.” Mulvaney said(opens in a new tab). “I apologize for this being the very first thing you hear from me. However, under the circumstances I suppose it is necessary. If you’re at 1700 G Street today, please stop by the fourth floor to say hello and grab a doughnut.”

If Mulvaney, a budget hawk, thinks he can sway members of an agency whose jobs he's poised to eliminate with Dunkin' Donuts, he's out of his mind. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau(opens in a new tab) was explicitly designed to protect consumers from banks and credit card companies. Mulvaney once famously called the agency "sad" and "sick." He is not, as members of the agency likely know, their friend.

And dude, if you're going to try and win your staff over with breakfast pastries, at least go for something slightly more delicious than Dunkin'. Some suggestions:

    • Krispy Kreme

    • (图2)

      Entenmann's Coffee Cake

    • Savory bacon cheddar scones

    • Literally anything else

The case is currently being decided. In the meantime, here's Twitter's majority opinion on the issue:

Chef José Andrés, the man who single-handedly served 3 million meals to Puerto Rico post Hurricane Maria, had the best response of them all.

    Case closed.

A tourist was bitten on the leg by a crocodile on at Cape Tribulation in Queensland, Australia on Monday night, while standing on a creek bank close to the waters edge.

A Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) spokesperson said in a statement the crocodile was estimated to be 2 to 2.5 metres (78 to 98 inches) long.

A video posted on the Facebook page of Ally Bullifent shows the crocodile attack, which comes out of nowhere. It'll be sure to give you a shock.

    (图2)

The EHP said it would carry out a site assessment of the area on Tuesday, and will possibly target the crocodile "for removal" as it has displayed dangerous behaviour in a designated area. This means it'll be moved to a crocodile farm or a zoo, according to the Cairns Post(opens in a new tab).

For authorities, it also serves as a reminder about staying safe in areas where crocodiles might be around. Earlier this year, an 18-year-old boy was attacked by a crocodile while reportedly trying to impress a girl.

So it's understandable why a town crier -- with his elaborate, red and gold robed dress and tricorn hat -- attracted people's attention on social media when he was depicted in an ABC News video as he announces the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement outside of Buckingham Palace:

"Oyez, oyez, oyz!" He yells in the video. "Buckingham Palace is proud to announce the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. God save the Queen!"

It can't get any more British than this.

Business Insider posted a similar video, calling him "the Royal Town Crier":

However, it turns out the eccentric guy is not officially appointed by the Queen, nor is he a real town crier. His real name is Tony Appleton, from Romford, east London, and he's been making royal announcements for years, bell and scroll on hand.

Yep, the McRib is apparently making a comeback — but there's a catch.

The sandwich is set to come back into wide circulation on Oct. 31, with McDonald's stressing on their site that this will be a "farewell tour".

"The McRib is back!" reads the description(Opens in a new tab). "It starts with seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce, topped with slivered onions and dill pickles, all served on a toasted homestyle bun. When everything combines you have BBQ pork sandwich perfection. Get one while you can because this is the McRib Farewell Tour."

The official press release(Opens in a new tab), meanwhile, tells a slightly different story.

"Like any true farewell tour, we’re hoping this isn’t a 'goodbye' but a 'see you later,' it reads. "Because as our McRib stans have experienced time and time again: you never know when – or if – the McRib is coming back."

Given the fact the McRib has been going on farewell tours for over 15 years now(Opens in a new tab), we're going to guess this isn't the last we've seen of it.

On Thursday, British TV presenter Richard Osman kicked off the latest in his ongoing series of poll-based Twitter competitions: The "World Cup of Christmas Songs 2017". Basically it's a knockout game in which a bunch of songs are arranged into groups, people vote for their favourite, and then the lowest-voted tracks are gradually whittled down until a winner is crowned.

Here's how the first round panned out:

After some definitive victories from "Last Christmas" and "Fairytale of New York", it was on to Round 2.

Entering the quarter-finals, the tension was mounting.

By this point, the competition had massively heated up. It was Mariah Carey vs. Wham!, and The Pogues vs. Wizzard. The semi-finals were set to be super tense...

80,000 votes later, though, and the two finalists had emerged: "Last Christmas" vs. "Fairytale of New York". A battle for the ages.

And there could only be one winner...

To be fair it's clearly the best Christmas song, isn't it? Was there ever any doubt?

Earlier this year we got to watch the Lord of the Rings cast hanging out on a video call for an episode of Josh Gad's YouTube series Reunited Apart, and now they've created a fellowship once again — only this time, for a very different reason.

On Wednesday, former Balrog-conquerer Ian McKellen took to Twitter to share a video advertising Project Northmoor(Opens in a new tab) — a campaign led by author Julia Golding to purchase J.R.R. Tolkien's former home in Oxford, UK, so it can be transformed into a literary centre dedicated to his work.

The video features cast members from both The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, including the likes of McKellen (Gandalf), Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), and Annie Lennox (who won an Academy Award for her song "Into the West" for The Return of the King), discussing Tolkien's life and work before moving on to talk about the proposed purchase of the Grade II listed building.

Project Northmoor is aiming to raise £4.5 million ($6.1 million) via crowdfunding(Opens in a new tab), which would be used to cover the cost of purchase and renovation. The centre would then be used to run "residential courses for limited numbers", per the site's FAQs(Opens in a new tab).

Fans can select from various different gift levels(Opens in a new tab) on the website, ranging from Hobbit (£20 and inclusion in a "Red Book of Funders" in Tolkien's study) to Wizard (£200,000 and the chance to have a room in the house dedicated in your name, along with invitations to various special events).

"We cannot achieve this without the support of the worldwide community of Tolkien fan," says McKellen in the video. "We will only succeed if we all do this together, as a fellowship."

The campaign is only a day old at the time of writing, but the fellowship still has a long way to go yet — according to(Opens in a new tab) the website's "quest progress," six percent of the total has been raised so far, which is equivalent to around £270,000.

Which pretty much sums up all of our reactions, since Gerard is the youngest American man to win a gold medal in 90 years(opens in a new tab) -- some compare his killer snowboarding skills to Shaun White's. He also didn't realize that winning was his dream until pretty recently. In fact, he's barely followed the Winter Olympics.

    (图2)

“I just didn’t really think I knew what the Olympics is,” Gerard told Yahoo, “I kind of grew up just watching Dew Tour and X-Games. I’d never really realized how big it is.

With a group of 17 people out to support him at the games, Gerard says his friends and family started celebrations early by shotgunning beers at 8:30 a.m.

Now that he's officially a gold medalist, the Colorado teen will hopefully be able to binge Brooklyn Nine-Nine and sleep in all he wants.

Guy makes a hilarious slam poetry video for sister who didnt FaceTime him back

You can't really explain the bond between siblings. One minute you have them in a chokehold for dominance over the TV remote, the next minute you're texting them surreal memes.

Even if you love them, eventually they'll grind your gears in one way or another. And when they do, what's the go-to revenge? Spamming them with texts? Barging in their room without asking? How about some passive-aggressive slam poetry?

Kristine Berchtold didn't answer her brother John's FaceTime call, so he decided to get back at her in the most sibling way he could — by sending her a little performance titled "Sister Betrayal."

"Yeah I had a sister...but more like a fister, fake sister, she needs some lister... ine, to rinse out her bad breath. And by bad breath I mean, the stench of death upon our relationship." He goes on like this, punctuating his on-the-fly rhymes with cheeky jabs at his sister.

"We have a very comedic relationship in that we will go after each other in that way," John told Mashable. "Normally, I'll leave a voicemail pretending to be an angry businessman demanding his money to be returned (among other made up characters), or I'll simply text her "YOU'LL RUE THE DAY!" It's sort of this big running joke."

Halfway through the video when he's in the middle of going off about his sister "sitting up pretty, up in the throne of, Kings of Leon—" the recording cuts out, but he starts ranting again as if nothing happened.

    (图2)

While John says he's never done slam poetry live onstage before, sometimes he will call his sister and improv a character on the fly, and she'll roll with it. "She will 'yes, and...' and play along, and then I'll hang up and we won't even speak for the rest of the day. We don't take the phone calls very seriously."

Kristine showed off their sibling phone habits too by lovingly calling him out on Twitter after she posted the video.

Have you ever felt like going off at your sibling, punctuating your every word and waving your hands around to make your point? Twitter has.

Some couldn't help but compare John's sick rhymes to the slam poetry scene from 21 Jump Street with Jonah Hill.

John does say that he tries to speak to his family almost every day since he currently lives across the country, "so it's not a big deal if she [doesn't answer.] I just pretend it's a big deal because it's funny." But on the other hand he "apologizes to anyone who's seen the video."

  • How to GIF YouTube videos in 10 simple steps

How to GIF YouTube videos in 10 simple steps

So you're watching a fun video on YouTube. Neat, good for you.

    (图1)

You've seen a moment you really like, and you want to convert that fun little moment from YouTube into a GIF. I get it, pal, GIFs can be fun.

Don't be embarrassed if you don't know where to start. Creating an animated GIF from YouTube is easy and I've broken the process down into 10 very simple steps.

    OK then, let's do it.

    1. Pull up your YouTube video and copy the link

For demonstration purposes, I'm choosing the "Instagram" sketch from Netflix's(Opens in a new tab) hilariously bonkers, truly wonderful sketch show I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.

Why? Because I love that show and it is very GIF-able.

    2. Go to Giphy.com(Opens in a new tab) and create an account

You don't need a fancy GIF maker or Photoshop to create a GIF from a YouTube video. You just a Giphy account.

I'm assuming here that if you're looking for tips to make a GIF, you do not have a Giphy account. So go ahead and make one. You must have an account to make GIFs on Giphy, which wasn't the case in the past. It's simple: You just need an email address and a password. There are other GIF converters out there, but using Giphy is going to be the easiest path and will leave you with a quality GIF.

    3. On Giphy.com, click the "create" icon right beside "Upload in the righthand corner.

    It looks like this:

    4. Paste your YouTube link into the blank space under the title "Add Any URL"

Below is what that'll look like. You can also make GIFs from Vimeo, Giphy, or from videos you have on your computer.

GIPHY gif maker. Credit: Screenshot / giphy

    5. Once you paste your link, Giphy will automatically take you to a GIF-maker tool. In this tool you can select the time and duration of your GIF.

So here's where the fun starts. You just have to locate the part of the video you'd like to turn into a GIF, then select the length of the loop. (Note: It may be helpful to toggle around with the timing on YouTube then move the Giphy time-selection tool to where you want it.)

For my demonstration, for instance, I really wanted the moment when Vanessa Bayer's character said, "I hope nobody gulps us," because I find that phrase to be very funny.

On YouTube, I saw that line started around 1:21, so on Giphy, I jumped straight there.

    6. Cut the GIF to your exact length then hit "Continue to Decorate"

So, after jumping to 1:21 in the video, I found a 1.9 second duration that perfectly captured Bayer's line-delivery while also removing a camera cut that made the loop look weird. Here's what the page will look like.

    7. Add captions or any other decoration

For my GIF, I wanted the line: "Hope nobody gulps us." You can play around with filters, animations, fonts, and drawing but I'm keeping it simple here.

I chose a simple "caption" text and yellow font. Here's what that looks like.

    8. Scroll down and hit "Continue to Upload" at the bottom right of the page

    Here's the button:

    9. Upload your GIF

The "Upload to Giphy" be in the bottom right part of your screen. You can also add relevant tags if you want to make your creation easier to find for others. I put "ITSYL" and "gulp" for mine because why not?

The button you're looking for. Credit: giphy / screenshot

    10. Save the image

Right click on the image, and hit "save image as." You can choose a name for it and bam, your GIF is downloaded. You can use that downloaded GIF image anywhere you would normally use a regular image. Giphy also gives you lots of options to share it on all sorts of platforms like Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, and others.

OK, then there it is. You have a GIF. Hope that helps. Here's mine.

Via Giphy(opens in a new tab)(Opens in a new tab)

It's worth noting Giphy is far from the only tool to make GIFs, it just happens to be my favorite. But here are few other tools to make GIFs out of YouTube videos (and other things) that you can try.

    • You can just add "GIF" before the word YouTube in a link. Here's a tutorial(Opens in a new tab) on how this works, but if you take any YouTube video and write the word "GIF" into the URL(Opens in a new tab), it takes you to a GIF editor. It doesn't get much easier than that. If writing GIF into a URL confuses you, the same tool can be found at GIFs.com(Opens in a new tab).

    • Giphy also has a Mac app called Giphy Capture(Opens in a new tab), which allows you to screen capture anything and make a GIF out of it. It's a super useful tool if you want to make GIFs that aren't simple YouTube links.

    • GIFRun is a tool(Opens in a new tab) that will let you make a GIF out of just about anything, including TikTok.

    • Imgflip has a GIF maker(Opens in a new tab) that's slightly more complicated than some of the other options. But it does allow you to play around but more, giving you the ability to change the width the of the video and the frame rate.

    • The aptly named Make A GIF allows you to(Opens in a new tab), well, make a GIF. It has an easy to use YouTube-to-GIF tab as well as other options, like Facebook-to-GIF and uploading a GIF.

Internet enamored by a 14-year-old’s captivating I Voted sticker in county contest

Ulster County’s second annual 'Ulster Votes I Voted Sticker Contest' (Opens in a new tab)is another reminder of the internet's power in online voting, and a 14-year-old’s sticker submission is inspiring new hope for Gen Z.

    (图1)

During the month of July, folks have the opportunity to vote for their favorite sticker design. The winning sticker will be distributed to all Ulster County voters who participate in the November 8, 2022, General Election. This year, the contest had eight finalists from the county between the ages of 13 and 18. Hudson's sticker has gathered about 51,300 votes, a whopping 94 percent of the total votes.  It's pretty clear why folks are enjoying it.

"I did not think I was going to get as much attention as I did," Hudson told the Times Herald-Record(Opens in a new tab).

"I was the first person from our office to ever see his design and I remember that moment vividly," said Ashley Dittus, Democratic commissioner for the Board of Elections. "I even printed it out and brought it around to everyone in the office because I thought it was so cool. Everyone agreed."

Hudson’s sticker has also gone viral on TikTok(Opens in a new tab), with user toucannabanana captioning her video “Gen Z is more powerful than we ever could have imagined.”

Twitter is also quite taken with Hudson’s design, with some even speculating that it might incentivize voters to participate in the general election:

"I think that no matter who our voters are coming out to vote for this fall, they will be leaving with something unique and different and I hope it will put a smile on their face," says Dittus. "We want people, especially young people, to know that their votes count and that their voice matters."

Hudson’s design might have the most votes right now, but the sticker competition is open to voters until the end of July, so get your votes in(Opens in a new tab).

  • Spotify rolls out Sleep Timer for iOS to help lull Apple users into a deep slumber

Spotify rolls out Sleep Timer for iOS to help lull Apple users into a deep slumber

Spotify announced the launch of a handy feature for iOS users Monday: It's designed for people who play Spotify tracks while they're going to bed.

    (图1)

"Sleep Timer" lets users set a time when they want their music or other soothing sounds to automatically turn off. That means you can put on your favorite bedtime track to fall asleep without worrying that Spotify will keep playing long into the night.

To find the feature, navigate to the three dots button in the top right corner of the play screen (that's the screen that shows the song currently playing). Scroll down, and if you've updated your app, you should see the Sleep Timer feature. Then you can choose how long you want Spotify to play for, whether five minutes, an hour, or until the end of the track.

Spotify already released the feature for Android in the spring, which Reddit users spotted in May(Opens in a new tab).

The expansion to iOS is convenient, even though there's already a way to effectively set a sleep timer directly through your iPhone or other Apple product. When you set a timer in Apple's clock feature, you get to choose what happens when the timer goes off via the "When Timer Ends" option list. This lets you pick the ringtone — but scroll down, and you'll also find an option for "Stop Playing."

Whichever way iPhone users want to control their bedtime audio experience, sweet dreams.
