After the week that was, there's nothing more satisfying than watching a young racehorse rampaging through a French betting bar.

Customers merrily spending their morning at a local establishment in Chantilly, north of Paris, were rudely interrupted by a young bucking horse around 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24.

In CCTV footage taken from the PMU bar (that's Pari Mutuel Urbain, France's national betting system), the lively and seemingly panicked filly prances through the tables and chairs, while customers flee.

According to French newspaper Ouest France(opens in a new tab), the hoofed anarchist had fled approximately one kilometre (0.6 miles) from its stable within a training facility near Chantilly's racecourse.

According to witnesses who talked to the publisher, the bar door was slightly open, and customers saw the horse coming, but didn't think it would actually come into the bar. Luckily, no one was injured.

"She came in, pushing the door. She raced all the way to the PMU corner. Then, the filly turned around, breaking a table and chairs," bar owner Stéphane Jasmin told the newspaper, as per Google Translate.

So, how did this young rebel escape? The horse's trainer, Jean-Marie Béguigné, told OF: "Between the track and the stables, his rider fell. The filly escaped by going on the road, crossing a roundabout before entering this bar."

Although the renegade was reportedly apprehended in a car park, and returned to the stable, Béguigné said the horse has "a penchant for escape."

Needless to say, folks were rather taken with this cheeky cheval.

The irony was not lost on those with local knowledge that the young budding racehorse had rampaged its way through a bar where people can bet on horse races — in Chantilly, of all places, which is renowned for its horse racing industry.

Of course, this young'un wouldn't be the first horse to walk into a bar.

Perhaps the biggest bummer about Twitter's new 280-character limit is that it allows the current president to compose tweets like this one:

On Monday morning, President Donald Trump hit Twitter to suggest a "FAKE NEWS TROPHY" for whichever news network he deems produces "the most dishonest, corrupt" coverage of his presidency. As usual, Fox was excluded from Trump's media rage.

In the same tweet, Trump referred to himself as the American people's favorite president with a parenthetical "(me)." According the most recent Gallup(opens in a new tab) poll, the self-described "favorite" president's approval rating currently sits at 37 percent.

Naturally the internet jumped all over Trump's first tweet of the day. Some even have a solid suggestion for Trump's proposed "FAKE NEWS TROPHY":

Project Entrepreneur expands accelerator program to help more women entrepreneurs build scalable companies

    (图1)

Since launching in 2015, Project Entrepreneur(opens in a new tab) — a media partner of Mashable — has trained more than 1,200 aspiring entrepreneurs representing 131 U.S. cities. Its annual venture competition has yielded an alumnae community of nearly 400 women entrepreneurs, with the 2016 finalists reporting $10+ million raised in seed and pre-seed funding.

Now entering its third year, Project Entrepreneur (PE) — an initiative from the Rent the Runway Foundation and UBS Elevating Entrepreneurs(opens in a new tab) — is expanding the number of winning companies in the accelerator from three to five.

“We are so excited to continue working with UBS in providing women with the tools they need to create high-growth companies, and see their visions through,” said Jennifer Hyman, CEO and Co-Founder of Rent the Runway. “Past participants in our accelerator continue to inspire us with their incredible progress, including closing rounds of funding. We are eager to provide the next class of talented female founders with the tools and support they need to scale, and to see the disruption their companies bring to various different industries.”

PE's annual venture competition is open to female founders who are in the prototype or beta stages, have their first paying customers, or are generating revenue. The top 200 applicants will be invited to attend the PE Intensive in New York City on April 13-14, 2018, a free two-day event comprised of in-depth workshops, expert speakers and a pitch competition. The five winning founders will each receive a $10,000 grant, a spot in the five-week accelerator program at Rent the Runway’s New York office and mentorship and engagement with UBS executives, entrepreneurs, and investors. Founders interested can apply online(opens in a new tab); but don’t wait, as the deadline is December 1st!

Last year’s winning companies included: New York-based LOLI Beauty(opens in a new tab), the first BIY (Blend It Yourself) clean and green beauty brand; Scottsdale-based The Touchpoint Solution(opens in a new tab), a neuroscience wearable that alleviates stress by altering the body’s stress response in as little as 30 seconds; and San Francisco-based Lace & Liberty(opens in a new tab), merging direct-to-consumer convenience with luxury bespoke bridalwear. Two additional New York-based companies were hosted by The Knot/XO Group Co-Founder Carley Roney and designer Rebecca Minkoff: Repeat Roses(opens in a new tab), a sustainable floral waste removal business that gives back to people and planet, and Reboundwear(opens in a new tab), athleisure wear with a purpose, respectively.

    (图2)

“The caliber of companies we're seeing through Project Entrepreneur further validates what we've always believed — that there is an incredible population of talented female founders in cities and towns across the country,” said Lori Feinsilver, UBS Head of Community Affairs & Corporate Responsibility, Americas. “Being able to reach these women and provide them with access to resources and support that will help fuel their growth gives us confidence that we can indeed level the playing field.”

  • Two people trying to run the same government agency makes for a really awkward first day

Two people trying to run the same government agency makes for a really awkward first day

    (图1)

Revolutionaries, take note -- if you're planning a government takeover, please use high quality breakfast pastries.

That's a lesson that White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney(opens in a new tab) apparently hadn't learned when he stepped into the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau today. He was there to take on an additional job as the agency's director.

The only problem? The agency's acting director, Leandra English, refused to cede it to him, in the workplace drama of the decade.

As a Trump appointee, Mulvaney wasn't exactly welcomed at at the job, so he brought crappy Dunkin' Donuts as a way to "ease" himself into an agency he's expected to destroy.

SEE ALSO: Sorry, Cards Against Humanity can't stop Trump's wall

On Friday, Director Richard Cordray(opens in a new tab) stepped down, leaving English to serve as acting director. Last night, English filed a lawsuit claiming that she is the "rightful acting director" of the agency. English has asked the court to impose a temporary restraining order to prevent Trump from appointing anyone, arguing that she is entitled to her position under the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Law(opens in a new tab).

None of that stopped Mulvaney. On Monday, the Budget Director stepped into the CFPB, ready to take on his new job.

This is how English responded in an email sent to 1,600 staff.

"I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. With Thanksgiving in mind, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude to all of you for your service,” English said(opens in a new tab), signing the note with her title, "Acting Director."

And that, my friends, is what we call a death drop.

Via Giphy(opens in a new tab)

    Here's how Mulvaney responded:

“Please disregard any instructions you receive from Ms. English in her presumed capacity as acting director.” Mulvaney said(opens in a new tab). “I apologize for this being the very first thing you hear from me. However, under the circumstances I suppose it is necessary. If you’re at 1700 G Street today, please stop by the fourth floor to say hello and grab a doughnut.”

If Mulvaney, a budget hawk, thinks he can sway members of an agency whose jobs he's poised to eliminate with Dunkin' Donuts, he's out of his mind. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau(opens in a new tab) was explicitly designed to protect consumers from banks and credit card companies. Mulvaney once famously called the agency "sad" and "sick." He is not, as members of the agency likely know, their friend.

And dude, if you're going to try and win your staff over with breakfast pastries, at least go for something slightly more delicious than Dunkin'. Some suggestions:

    • Krispy Kreme

    • (图2)

      Entenmann's Coffee Cake

    • Savory bacon cheddar scones

    • Literally anything else

The case is currently being decided. In the meantime, here's Twitter's majority opinion on the issue:

Chef José Andrés, the man who single-handedly served 3 million meals to Puerto Rico post Hurricane Maria, had the best response of them all.

    Case closed.

A Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) spokesperson said in a statement the crocodile was estimated to be 2 to 2.5 metres (78 to 98 inches) long.

A video posted on the Facebook page of Ally Bullifent shows the crocodile attack, which comes out of nowhere. It'll be sure to give you a shock.

The EHP said it would carry out a site assessment of the area on Tuesday, and will possibly target the crocodile "for removal" as it has displayed dangerous behaviour in a designated area. This means it'll be moved to a crocodile farm or a zoo, according to the Cairns Post(opens in a new tab).

For authorities, it also serves as a reminder about staying safe in areas where crocodiles might be around. Earlier this year, an 18-year-old boy was attacked by a crocodile while reportedly trying to impress a girl.

So it's understandable why a town crier -- with his elaborate, red and gold robed dress and tricorn hat -- attracted people's attention on social media when he was depicted in an ABC News video as he announces the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement outside of Buckingham Palace:

"Oyez, oyez, oyz!" He yells in the video. "Buckingham Palace is proud to announce the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. God save the Queen!"

It can't get any more British than this.

Business Insider posted a similar video, calling him "the Royal Town Crier":

In the past few years there's been a wave of hilariously flawed purchases from big online retailers like Amazon, the most common probably being teeny version of real products. However, this pillow case may take the cake for funniest shopping scam.

Its a good day, Robin: Soccer stars, Biden, Clinton celebrate womens equal pay win

After four World Cup wins and millions of dollars in lost wages, U.S. women soccer players are finally scoring equal pay.

    (图1)

Tuesday, the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) and the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) announced that they had reached a settlement in the team's equal pay class action lawsuit. President Biden was among the many politicians, advocates, celebrities, and, of course, soccer stars who cheered the settlement on social media.

Filed in 2019 with superstars like Megan Rapinoe leading the charge, the suit alleged that women were getting paid less than their counterparts on the men's soccer team. The settlement allots $22 million to the players in the lawsuit, plus $2 million to go toward a fund for promoting women's and girl's soccer that the players can apply to use.

The team originally wanted $67 million in back pay. But the settlement also comes with the promise that pay for future USWNT players will be equal with men's teams.

Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, and new USSF president Cindy Cone (who succeeded the former president, who oversaw many of the years of pay disparity) shared the good news on Good Morning America. Rapinoe showed some love for host Robin Roberts as both shared in the joy.

"It's a good day, Robin," Rapinoe said.

High-profile supporters of the team and the equal pay movement also celebrated on social media. That included truly goals-worth interactions between fellow icons Rapinoe, Hillary Clinton, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

While the settlement is certainly momentous, the USSF is only one part of the equal pay equation. Much of the disparity also comes from the international soccer organization FIFA, which awards prize money to players in World Cup tournaments. The USSF says FIFA awards less money to women than to men, which is part of the reason for the gender gap. Rapinoe told ESPN(Opens in a new tab) that, going forward, the USWNT and the USSF can lobby FIFA to right this wrong together.

There is still work to be done with FIFA, and the women's player's union and the USSF still have to finalize a collective bargaining agreement. But players past and present took a moment Tuesday to cheer on the settlement.

Celebrities and fellow athletes, including Billie Jean King, gave props to the team, too.

Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, Reddit founder, and the lead founding investor in the new women's Los Angeles soccer team, sent one up with a well-chosen gif.

We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

A guide to floral foam videos, the slime videos of 2018

For what seemed like eons, but was really just most of 2017, the internet was deeply into slime.

Though slime videos are still a mainstay of the Instagram Discover page, our natural inclination to change things up has led us down the path to other forms of ASMR entertainment, including soap cutting and kinetic sand slicing.

Elsewhere on Instagram, another ASMR-friendly trend is emerging in the form of crunchy, squishy, glitter-heavy floral foam videos.

But first: what is floral foam?

You likely know floral foam as a craft supply used in floral arranging. Traditionally, a florist might use a block of foam saturated in water to secure cut flowers inside a vessel. The ASMR creators of Instagram, meanwhile, have discovered its alternative use as a highly absorbent, delightfully sliceable first class ticket to Insta stardom.

Dry floral foam straight from the shelves of your local craft shop has a malleable quality that makes it perfect for crunching and crumbling on camera. When wet, floral foam becomes heavy and fragile. With just a squeeze, soaked foam disintegrates into a murky green liquid.

But while the sopping remnants of a craft-store staple aren't Instagram-worthy in their own right, the most successful foam crushers add glitter to the mix, lending the foam and its sparkling guts a galactic quality.

    An example:

According to Australian floral retailer Koch & Co, floral foam is made with formaldehyde(opens in a new tab) and other not-so-fun chemicals, and should be handled while wearing gloves, ideally in a well-ventilated area.

Still, those going without gloves don't need to panic. Per a piece on floral foam safety from the Sydney Morning Herald(opens in a new tab)'s Liam Mannix, the craft supply isn't as toxic as one might expect.

    Per SMH:

"The foam is made with two toxic chemicals, but is not necessarily harmful. There is almost no phenol or formaldehyde left in the finished product – less than 0.1 per cent of each chemical."

But while floral foam won't do much damage to your body, as the piece and florists(opens in a new tab) have(opens in a new tab) noted(opens in a new tab), dumping the non-biodegradable residue down the drain isn't great for the planet, something viewers should keep in mind.

There's one family we just can't get enough of. No, no, we're not talking about the Kardashians.

The younger royals — namely William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan — posed alongside their father Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for a pretty adorable family pic.

Trumps State of the Union slogan was used before... by Hillary Clinton

    (图1)

A few hours before President Trump was slated to address the nation in his first State of the Union Address, the White House released(opens in a new tab) a series of excerpts from Trump's prepared speech. But one of the catchiest slogans was actually coined by none other that Hillary Clinton. Whoops!

SEE ALSO: Why I, a politics nerd, will never watch a Trump State of the Union

Remembering accusations that First Lady Melania Trump plagiarized a speech by former First Lady Michelle Obama at the Republican National Convention in 2016, people poured over Trump's excerpts to find any possible lifted material.

What immediately stood out was the declaration of a "new American moment," a phrase which Hillary Clinton used during her Senate confirmation hearing in January 2009 when she was appointed Secretary of State by then President Barack Obama.

"No matter how daunting our challenges may be, I have a steadfast faith in our country and our people, and I am proud to be an American at the dawning of this new American moment," Clinton said at the time(opens in a new tab) towards the end of her speech.

Clinton also used the phrase in 2010 during a speech on foreign policy, as reported by the Washington Post(opens in a new tab).

According to the White House, Trump is slated to say, "This is our New American Moment. There has never been a better time to start living the American dream." The context of that excerpt is unclear, though it does come after another excerpt on tax cuts, which were recently passed in December(opens in a new tab), and are touted as a major victory by the Trump administration.

#DearProfessorFord: Actresses support Brett Kavanaughs accuser ahead of hearings

Hollywood actresses and women from around the U.S., some being key members of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, have shown their support for Christine Blasey Ford.

Blasey, a professor at California's Palo Alto University, who recently accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, has seen significant public support after she made the difficult decision to publicly share her story(opens in a new tab).

Now, the likes of Julianne Moore, America Ferrera, Gabrielle Union, Amber Tamblyn, Eva Longoria, Jamia Wilson, and Marisa Tomei, along with many other women from different situations, all read the same supportive letter to Ford, in a video posted to Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday with the hashtag #DearProfessorFord.

It's signed collectively from "your sisters."

"We applaud your courage in coming forward for the public good, and we will be with you as you face the inevitable backlash," the letter reads.

"You are strong. And you are not alone. You are a survivor. Millions of us have your back. You and your testimony are credible."

It finishes with three little words many of the women in this video would have craved to hear when some of them, like Union, bravely came forward with their own stories of sexual abuse.

    "We believe you."

Here's the full letter, which is best read by the women themselves in the video. It ends with a call to action, for people to call their senators to demand a "full, fair, and trauma-informed investigation."

    Dear Professor Ford.

We know how difficult it is to stand up to powerful people. We want to thank you for publicly sharing your story of sexual violence. As members of the Senate determine whether Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should serve as a Supreme Court Justice, this context is critical.

The behavior you described was wrong, and runs directly counter to upholding the law and promoting justice. He should not be confirmed.

We can also imagine how shocking and overwhelming it must have been to have your truths shared on a national stage without your permission. You should be the only decision maker about how your story is shared, if ever."

We applaud your courage in coming forward for the public good, and we will be with you as you face the inevitable backlash.

You are strong. And you are not alone. You are a survivor. Millions of us have your back. You and your testimony are credible.

    We believe you.

    Signed,

    Your sisters.

Though a new Senate hearing on the accusation was scheduled for Monday, Blasey has requested(opens in a new tab) an FBI investigation be done before she testifies, but left open the possibility that she might appear before the committee.

BeReal unveils its latest attempt to Be Relevant again

Has BeReal's gimmick lost its novelty for you? It's desperately trying to win you back.

Today (May 1), BeReal(opens in a new tab) launched RealPeople(opens in a new tab), what the app calls "a curated timeline of the most interesting people" to users in the UK. It will be available globally "very soon."

While the new feature sounds opposed to the anti-influencer platform, in a press release BeReal explains, "RealPeople isn't about influencing, amassing likes and comments, or promoting brands. You won't see perfect photoshopped pictures, product recommendations, or ads disguised as posts." The app ensures users that RealPeople will be a combination of people you know and don't and that it's an attempt to show that public figures are real and boring too. OK...

SEE ALSO: You can now share what you're listening to on Spotify to your next BeReal

The update sounds like the feed on every other social media platform minus filters and sponsored posts. It comes on the heels of another update unveiled last week in the UK, Bonus BeReal(opens in a new tab). The feature is now available in the U.S. Bonus BeReal allows you to post an additional two BeReals throughout the day — but only if you post your first during the allotted two-minute window. It encourages users to post authentically once a day and share two more highlights. But it distracts from why users enjoyed the app in the first place, that you only needed to go on once a day. Bonus BeReal creeps into the tired Instagram story territory.

The platform also recently partnered with Spotify(opens in a new tab) to allow users to share what song they're listening to with their dual camera selfie.

These back-to-back updates are yet another effort to retain users after BeReal's daily users dropped from 20 million in October 2022 to 10.4 million in February 2023. BeReal first gained popularity in the U.S. on college campuses at the beginning of 2022, and from there it skyrocketed in relevancy across demographics, peaking in September 2022 with 12 million monthly downloads. Before this slew of changes, BeReal made no significant updates to the app.

    Now it's playing catch-up.
