The internet made sooooo many jokes about Trumps fake news trophy tweet
Perhaps the biggest bummer about Twitter's new 280-character limit is that it allows the current president to compose tweets like this one:

On Monday morning, President Donald Trump hit Twitter to suggest a "FAKE NEWS TROPHY" for whichever news network he deems produces "the most dishonest, corrupt" coverage of his presidency. As usual, Fox was excluded from Trump's media rage.
In the same tweet, Trump referred to himself as the American people's favorite president with a parenthetical "(me)." According the most recent Gallup(opens in a new tab) poll, the self-described "favorite" president's approval rating currently sits at 37 percent.
Naturally the internet jumped all over Trump's first tweet of the day. Some even have a solid suggestion for Trump's proposed "FAKE NEWS TROPHY":

Project Entrepreneur expands accelerator program to help more women entrepreneurs build scalable companies
Since launching in 2015, Project Entrepreneur(opens in a new tab) — a media partner of Mashable — has trained more than 1,200 aspiring entrepreneurs representing 131 U.S. cities. Its annual venture competition has yielded an alumnae community of nearly 400 women entrepreneurs, with the 2016 finalists reporting $10+ million raised in seed and pre-seed funding.
Now entering its third year, Project Entrepreneur (PE) — an initiative from the Rent the Runway Foundation and UBS Elevating Entrepreneurs(opens in a new tab) — is expanding the number of winning companies in the accelerator from three to five.
“We are so excited to continue working with UBS in providing women with the tools they need to create high-growth companies, and see their visions through,” said Jennifer Hyman, CEO and Co-Founder of Rent the Runway. “Past participants in our accelerator continue to inspire us with their incredible progress, including closing rounds of funding. We are eager to provide the next class of talented female founders with the tools and support they need to scale, and to see the disruption their companies bring to various different industries.”
PE's annual venture competition is open to female founders who are in the prototype or beta stages, have their first paying customers, or are generating revenue. The top 200 applicants will be invited to attend the PE Intensive in New York City on April 13-14, 2018, a free two-day event comprised of in-depth workshops, expert speakers and a pitch competition. The five winning founders will each receive a $10,000 grant, a spot in the five-week accelerator program at Rent the Runway’s New York office and mentorship and engagement with UBS executives, entrepreneurs, and investors. Founders interested can apply online(opens in a new tab); but don’t wait, as the deadline is December 1st!
Last year’s winning companies included: New York-based LOLI Beauty(opens in a new tab), the first BIY (Blend It Yourself) clean and green beauty brand; Scottsdale-based The Touchpoint Solution(opens in a new tab), a neuroscience wearable that alleviates stress by altering the body’s stress response in as little as 30 seconds; and San Francisco-based Lace & Liberty(opens in a new tab), merging direct-to-consumer convenience with luxury bespoke bridalwear. Two additional New York-based companies were hosted by The Knot/XO Group Co-Founder Carley Roney and designer Rebecca Minkoff: Repeat Roses(opens in a new tab), a sustainable floral waste removal business that gives back to people and planet, and Reboundwear(opens in a new tab), athleisure wear with a purpose, respectively.
“The caliber of companies we're seeing through Project Entrepreneur further validates what we've always believed — that there is an incredible population of talented female founders in cities and towns across the country,” said Lori Feinsilver, UBS Head of Community Affairs & Corporate Responsibility, Americas. “Being able to reach these women and provide them with access to resources and support that will help fuel their growth gives us confidence that we can indeed level the playing field.”

Two people trying to run the same government agency makes for a really awkward first day
Revolutionaries, take note -- if you're planning a government takeover, please use high quality breakfast pastries.
That's a lesson that White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney(opens in a new tab) apparently hadn't learned when he stepped into the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau today. He was there to take on an additional job as the agency's director.
The only problem? The agency's acting director, Leandra English, refused to cede it to him, in the workplace drama of the decade.
As a Trump appointee, Mulvaney wasn't exactly welcomed at at the job, so he brought crappy Dunkin' Donuts as a way to "ease" himself into an agency he's expected to destroy.
SEE ALSO:
Sorry, Cards Against Humanity can't stop Trump's wall
On Friday, Director Richard Cordray(opens in a new tab) stepped down, leaving English to serve as acting director. Last night, English filed a lawsuit claiming that she is the "rightful acting director" of the agency. English has asked the court to impose a temporary restraining order to prevent Trump from appointing anyone, arguing that she is entitled to her position under the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Law(opens in a new tab).

— Katie Rogers (@katierogers) November 27, 2017(opens in a new tab)
None of that stopped Mulvaney. On Monday, the Budget Director stepped into the CFPB, ready to take on his new job.
This is how English responded in an email sent to 1,600 staff.
"I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. With Thanksgiving in mind, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude to all of you for your service,” English said(opens in a new tab), signing the note with her title, "Acting Director."
And that, my friends, is what we call a death drop.
Via Giphy(opens in a new tab)
Here's how Mulvaney responded:
“Please disregard any instructions you receive from Ms. English in her presumed capacity as acting director.” Mulvaney said(opens in a new tab). “I apologize for this being the very first thing you hear from me. However, under the circumstances I suppose it is necessary. If you’re at 1700 G Street today, please stop by the fourth floor to say hello and grab a doughnut.”
If Mulvaney, a budget hawk, thinks he can sway members of an agency whose jobs he's poised to eliminate with Dunkin' Donuts, he's out of his mind. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau(opens in a new tab) was explicitly designed to protect consumers from banks and credit card companies. Mulvaney once famously called the agency "sad" and "sick." He is not, as members of the agency likely know, their friend.
And dude, if you're going to try and win your staff over with breakfast pastries, at least go for something slightly more delicious than Dunkin'. Some suggestions:
Krispy Kreme
Entenmann's Coffee Cake
Savory bacon cheddar scones
Literally anything else
The case is currently being decided. In the meantime, here's Twitter's majority opinion on the issue:

Woman posts video of crocodile attack, and it is heartstopping

A tourist was bitten on the leg by a crocodile on at Cape Tribulation in Queensland, Australia on Monday night, while standing on a creek bank close to the waters edge.

A Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) spokesperson said in a statement the crocodile was estimated to be 2 to 2.5 metres (78 to 98 inches) long.
A video posted on the Facebook page of Ally Bullifent shows the crocodile attack, which comes out of nowhere. It'll be sure to give you a shock.
The EHP said it would carry out a site assessment of the area on Tuesday, and will possibly target the crocodile "for removal" as it has displayed dangerous behaviour in a designated area. This means it'll be moved to a crocodile farm or a zoo, according to the Cairns Post(opens in a new tab).
For authorities, it also serves as a reminder about staying safe in areas where crocodiles might be around. Earlier this year, an 18-year-old boy was attacked by a crocodile while reportedly trying to impress a girl.

Google announces changes to sexual misconduct procedures
Google can apparently still live by "Don't be evil" when it wants to.
In an email sent to employees Thursday(opens in a new tab), Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google was making changes to the way that it handled sexual misconduct complaints. The new policies are the company's response to the employee walkouts last week protesting the company's past actions and policies.
"We recognize that we have not always gotten everything right in the past and we are sincerely sorry for that," Pichai wrote. "It's clear we need to make some changes."
SEE ALSO:
Report: Google paid Android creator Andy Rubin a ton of cash following sexual misconduct allegations
Notably, Pichai said that it was ending forced arbitration in cases of sexual harassment allegations. This was one of the demands of the walkout organizers, as detailed in an article for New York Magazine(opens in a new tab).
On November 1, more than 20,000 Google employees participated in walkouts around the world. The protests were in response to the New York Times (opens in a new tab)report(opens in a new tab) of Google's history of brushing assault allegations under the rug, particularly when it involved executives — including a $90 million payout to Android creator Andy Rubin to go quietly after he was accused of sexual misconduct.
In addition to an end to forced arbitration, the demands of the walkouts also included: A commitment to end pay and opportunity inequity; A publicly disclosed sexual harassment transparency report; A clear, uniform, globally inclusive process for reporting sexual misconduct; Promote the Chief Diversity Officer to answer directly to the CEO; appoint an Employee Representative to the Board.
Pichai addressed most of these demands in his overview of the new policy. He wrote that Google will continue to "recommit" to emphasizing diversity, and that the Chief Diversity Officer will "continue to provide monthly progress updates to me and my leadership team."
It is revamping sexual misconduct reporting in a few ways: there will be a dedicated online portal with live support to address claims, employees can bring along a "support person" during the process, and Google will provide follow-up counseling and "career support."
Pichai also said that Google will include more detailed reporting on sexual misconduct specifically in its "Investigations Report." He did not address the call for an employee board member.
An end to forced arbitration is significant because it gives employees who experience sexual misconduct the right to sue. That means there is no mandated policy that allegations remain under the purview of Google; it means Google no longer has the power to sweep something under the rug.

This raccoon influencer says they actually make good pets (but maybe stick to dogs)
Herbert Hoover wasn't the only one who thought raccoons make great pets(Opens in a new tab).
Most people think of raccoons as devilish, garbage-eating jumbo-rodents. Or, one may think of popular animated characters like Meeko, Pocahontas' cunning sidekick. Either way, it's unlikely to imagine them playing fetch or eating marshmallows out of your hand.
But that's not stopping some daring animal lovers from welcoming raccoons into their homes.
SEE ALSO:
Oreo, the animal inspiration for Marvel's Rocket Raccoon, has died
There are a host of reasons why raccoons should remain in the wild and not at the foot of your bed. According to Bill Dowd(Opens in a new tab), founder of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, there are many dangers that come with owning a raccoon. Since they become sexually active at just six months, they become aggressive early in their lives. Not to mention the unpracticality their rarity affords them; some vets won't treat raccoons, and finding someone to babysit your odd pet if you take a vacation may be difficult.
It also is wildly unethical to take a wild animal out of nature and bring it into your home.
However, some people just can't settle for any ol' furry companion from Petco. Luckily, those people aren't alone, as the internet allows every marginalized-pet owning group their own little corner.
The most famous pet raccoon on the internet is Tito, who lives in South Carolina with his owner, Mitchell. His day-to-day life is well-documented in a variety of adorable and entertaining YouTube videos(Opens in a new tab), from a snack eating contest (he loves whipped cream), to a trip to the pool (in which he floats on a dog.) We caught up with Mitchell over email and got the full scoop on what it's like owning a raccoon.
Of course, the first question was why get a raccoon?
"I didn’t actually go out of my way to get a pet raccoon. While I was working in pest control, Tito was found in someone’s attic. Unfortunately, the homeowner didn’t want anything to do with him and was going to put him down, so I took Tito in," Mitchell said.
Now, nearly two years later, Tito is thriving.
As a society, our view of raccoons is heavily influenced by the media, which usually depicts the creatures as trash eaters and reckless. However, they're very smart animals, according to Mitchell.
"They have the capability to solve problems and overcome obstacles many other pets could not," he said. "Although they walk on all fours, their front paws have the dexterity of people hands. Having those fine motor movements gets them in a ton of trouble!"
Mitchell isn't going to let the stigmas around the "trash pandas" stop him from caring for Tito, despite people not exactly understanding why he has a raccoon as a pet.
"People may say it’s 'unnatural', but if you think about it, any domesticated pet we have today was a wild animal at some point," Mitchell said.
Though there are obvious risks in owning a raccoon, Mitchell still believes Tito is a great pet for him.
"I think it’s all of their awesome qualities that come together to make such an amazing critter whether it’s their personality, cute looks, or crazy hands. A raccoon is unlike all other pets."
Here's Tito hanging out with some baby Pygmy goats:
He even does ASMR, a hobby most millennials on social media can appreciate:
Though we're positive that owning a raccoon will never be mainstream, it's safe to say that one man's trash-eating-animal is another man's treasure.

Carla Forcada, who lives in Barcelona, Spain, applied for the role of account executive at PR agency Impulsa Comunicación. After sending her CV, she received an email from the PR firm telling her that they were looking for a man because the role would require work with Coca-Cola and Carglass accounts. She tweeted a screenshot(opens in a new tab) of the email she received, which is written in Spanish, alongside the comment: "Unbelievable to think that some companies still don’t support gender equality in the workplace."
"Believe me, they need a man to be able to deal with the day to day, the visits, knowledge of production, etc," read the email.
Hi Carla,
Thanks for sending your CV…We are currently in the selection process but we are looking for a guy because the role requires to work with accounts such as Carglass and Coca-Cola… and believe me, they need a man to be able to deal with the day to day, the visits, knowledge of production, etc. But we will keep your professional history at hand in case we need any future help.
Thanks and good luck!

Coca-Cola España issued a statement on Twitter stating that it would no longer work with the PR agency and added that they support companies which have "inclusive, diverse, and equal" employment policies. "We are very sorry that our name has been aligned with this discriminatory and unfortunate response," read the tweet.

Carglass tweeted an apology at Forcada, stating that it had been offended by the email she'd received, stating that the company promotes gender equality and "acts like these do not represent our position". "We have expressed our position to Impulsa Comunicación."

Impulsa Comunicación has since made its website unavailable(opens in a new tab), but its director told ABC, a newspaper in Spain, that the company "in no circumstance" accepts discrimination.
"Apologies for the misunderstanding, I have personally spoken to this candidate," Pere Terés told ABC.
"We have invited her [Forcada] in. We are a company of transparency with parity, but in no way is it acceptable under any circumstance for there to be any type of discrimination," Terés continued.

Harini Logan won the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee in a lightning-round spell-off
Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan(Opens in a new tab) blitzed through a tiebreaker spell-off to win the The Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, successfully spelling 21 words within 90 seconds. It was the first spell-off in the Spelling Bee's history, after the element was first introduced last year(Opens in a new tab).
This year the Spelling Bee started with 324 competitors, though by Thursday's final they were narrowed down to just two: Logan, from San Antonio, Texas, and 12-year-old Vikram Raju(Opens in a new tab) from Denver, Colorado. Faced with these two spelling experts, the judges appeared to pull out their most difficult words in order to stump them. As such, the two finalists traded incorrect answers for several rounds, before the decision was made to hold a spell-off in order to break the tie.
Both Logan and Raju had 90 seconds to spell as many words as they could, given to them from the same list and in the same order. Raju took to the podium first while Logan was sequestered, correctly spelling 15 of the words he attempted.
It was an impressive accomplishment, but unfortunately not quite enough to win Raju this year's Scripps Spelling Bee. Logan subsequently bested his store by six words, managing to spell 21 words correctly and securing the win.
"It is my fourth time at the Bee, and this is just such a dream — and well, I am just overwhelmed," said Logan.
The 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee was the first time the competition was held completely in-person since 2019, as it was cancelled in 2020 and held partially virtually in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spell-off was one of the Scripps National Spelling Bee's most exciting moments in recent memory, though it wasn't the only dramatic event this year — nor the only one involving Logan.
Earlier in the finals Logan had been eliminated for providing an ostensibly incorrect answer in the multiple choice vocabulary section. Asked what "pullulation" means, she had defined it as the nesting of mating birds, when the answer the judges had been looking for was the swarming of bees.
However, upon review the judges determined Logan's given answer can also be considered correct. She was soon reinstated to the competition, and ultimately went on to win the entire thing. She takes home several prizes, including the Scripps Cup, a commemorative medal, reference works from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopædia Britannica, and a total of $52,500 in cash(Opens in a new tab). Raju doesn't go home empty-handed either, also winning a medal and $25,000 in cash for second place.
Sandy Bruno, youth and family coordinator at Comfort Zone Camp(Opens in a new tab), a national nonprofit bereavement camp for grieving families, experienced compassion fatigue in the aftermath of her husband's death. She had devoted her full emotional capacity to her children, while synchronously trying to control whatever she could in her life.
"When your partner in life dies unexpectedly, at the prime of their life, controlling things becomes more of a priority," she tells Mashable. "In theory, that works. In real life, all it did was make me exhausted and wiped out emotionally."
For those whose roles, whether professional or personal, are inextricably linked with empathy, compassion fatigue is a real and persisting possibility.
What is compassion fatigue?
Compassion fatigue(Opens in a new tab) is an occurrence that gained exposure during the pandemic, a time when all sorts of caregivers — from nurses and healthcare workers to parents — faced heightened responsibility, reduced boundaries, exhaustion, and recurring trauma. Renowned trauma expert Charles Figley described compassion fatigue(Opens in a new tab) as "the deep physical, emotional, and spiritual exhaustion that can result from working day to day in an intense caregiving environment" — or more simply, "the cost of caring."(Opens in a new tab)

The term compassion fatigue covers the psychological and physical impact of helping others, as licensed psychologist and mental health counselor Phylice Kessler(Opens in a new tab) explains the various symptoms.
"The main symptoms of compassion fatigue are feeling helpless and powerless in the face of patient suffering, reduced feelings of empathy and sensitivity, and feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by work demands," says Kessler. People with compassion fatigue are also likely to experience "irritability, feelings of detachment, [and] decreased pleasure in work," psychiatrist Dr. Julian Lagoy(Opens in a new tab) tells Mashable. Other effects include numbness, hopelessness, insomnia, anger, and a sense of isolation.
What's the difference between compassion fatigue and burnout?
These symptoms notably mirror those associated with burnout, an "occupational phenomenon"(Opens in a new tab) which is often closely linked to compassion fatigue(Opens in a new tab). Burnout, another commonplace term in the larger conversation about mental health, refers to the intense emotional turmoil associated with one's occupation, leading to chronic stress and dissatisfaction in the workplace. According to the World Health Organization(Opens in a new tab), burnout's three key symptoms are "feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and reduced professional efficacy."
Dr. Lauren Cook(Opens in a new tab), licensed psychologist, outlines the similar effects of burnout and compassion fatigue, saying, "We can start to lack empathy for others, feel impatient when people reach out, and we'll want to block off everything on our calendar." Still, they're different. Compassion fatigue is a more specific experience, and is often secondary, especially linked to secondary traumatic stress(Opens in a new tab) or vicarious trauma(Opens in a new tab), which result from empathetic engagement with the circumstances of others.
How does compassion fatigue affect people in their work?
The nature of compassion fatigue means that many working in traditional caregiving roles(Opens in a new tab) are likely to experience its symptoms. This includes first responders, medical professionals, social workers, journalists(Opens in a new tab), and lawyers specializing in family law or criminal law(Opens in a new tab).
Kelli Collins(Opens in a new tab), a licensed marriage and family therapist, describes compassion fatigue as "a shutdown."
"Think about muscle fatigue — if you work out too hard, your muscles might simply give out," she tells Mashable. "In the same way, compassion fatigue means your ability to offer compassion to others is dramatically impacted."
"Think about muscle fatigue — if you work out too hard, your muscles might simply give out. In the same way, compassion fatigue means your ability to offer compassion to others is dramatically impacted."
Collins herself experienced compassion fatigue as a young therapist working in a community mental health setting, where she "had the strong desire to help" but quickly realized some things were out of her "sphere of influence". She felt herself becoming irritable with loved ones, sleeping very little, and fantasizing about pivoting careers. It was an overwhelming time, during which she felt she was failing her clients.
"I thought that by giving endless compassion to my clients, I was 'leaving it all on the field'. In fact, bearing the responsibility for my clients' pain without consideration for my own needs and limits meant that I wasn’t a particularly effective therapist," she says.
Bruno, too, says she didn't take the time to attend to her own emotional needs while undergoing grief. Now, through her work at the Comfort Zone Camp, where she "listens to people's stories of loss, trauma, and grief" every day, she has learned to take the time for herself, while fostering connections with children and families.

Lynne Hughes, who founded Comfort Zone in 1999 and is now serves as CEO(Opens in a new tab), lost both her parents as a child, experiencing first-hand the lack of resources and support for grieving children. Hughes expresses similar sentiments about the challenge of compassion fatigue, stressing the importance of looking inward.
"Suffering from compassion fatigue does not mean you’re bad at helping or caring, it only means the scale between caring for others and caring for yourself is no longer balanced," she says. "When you're in a role where you're nurturing and caring for others – it's imperative to extend that nurture and care to yourself so that your 'well' does not run dry."

"Suffering from compassion fatigue does not mean you’re bad at helping or caring, it only means the scale between caring for others and caring for yourself is no longer balanced."
But both Hughes and Collins emphasize that it's not only traditional caregivers who experience compassion fatigue. "It is applicable to anyone in a caring role," says Hughes, while Collins believes it is a uniquely human condition, occupational or not.
"When you see someone on the street who lacks basic resources, when you get an alert that your local animal shelter has become overcrowded, when you read a news article about war and suffering in another country, you feel the pain of others, and whether you mean to or not, whether you can help or not, you have the strong desire to act."

Why mindfulness is the most important skill of 2022
Our capacity for empathy means the probability of experiencing some sort of compassion fatigue — even from absorbing the daily news cycle(Opens in a new tab) — is high for many. A constant barrage of ominous headlines and doomscrolling has contributed to this effect. Feelings of anxiety and uncertainty at the state of the world, such as attacks on reproductive rights, racial justice, and the effects of climate change are real concerns for anyone consuming media or simply existing today, highlighting the importance of recognizing compassion fatigue for what it is — and knowing how to find support. And while some may choose to channel their concern into empowerment and activism, it's crucial support your own wellbeing throughout the process to avoid exacerbating compassion fatigue.
What kind of support is there for people with compassion fatigue?
The commonality of potentially developing compassion fatigue means many people, from all walks of life, require foundational tools and support to manage it. Resources like Figley's study on compassion fatigue(Opens in a new tab) may provide necessary insight, while organizations like the Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project(Opens in a new tab), Caregiver Action Network(Opens in a new tab), and The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers(Opens in a new tab) host information(Opens in a new tab), firsthand accounts,(Opens in a new tab) and programs for individuals in specific roles(Opens in a new tab). There also are online support groups and forums, like The Caregiver Space(Opens in a new tab) and The Psychological PPE Community(Opens in a new tab)on Facebook, which facilitates open conversations on "the impact of empathic strain, burnout, and secondary trauma."
Battling compassion fatigue requires replenishing your own supply of compassion, as Collins says, as it's a "valuable resource," one that requires "accepting and honoring limits." The therapist recommends asking for help to personalise your experience and support strategy: turning to support groups and resources online, or requesting the support of a mental health professional.
Meanwhile, the act of setting personal and professional boundaries was overwhelmingly suggested by the caregivers and therapists we talked to, including Kessler, who deems this practice vital to preventing or recovering from compassion fatigue. "Take some time for yourself where you can find some quiet. Even if it's cutting back on sound of all kinds, allow yourself space to simply be," agrees Cook. Hughes suggests practicing routes of self-care: journaling, meditating, or adopting a non-related work hobby.
"It’s the same way the flight attendant tells us to put the oxygen mask on ourselves before assisting others during takeoff," Hughes says. "Put the oxygen mask on yourself first."

Back at its all-time low price of $279, the second-newest Apple Watc(Opens in a new tab)h in the most pimped-out configuration (45mm, GPS + Cellular) is a total steal. Unfortunately, the green model is the only colorway on sale at this price — the others will cost you $329, which is still a solid discount. The biggest difference between the Series 7 and the newer Series 8 is the chip that runs it, a new low-power mode that extends the battery life, and a couple of new health and safety-related features (namely, a body temperature sensor, crash detection, and fertility tracking). If you're not pressed on getting the latest and greatest device, the Series 7 will suit you just fine — especially at this price.

Trying to get your Instagram profile out there a little more? One thing you might want to think about doing is making it more search-friendly.
In other words, you want to edit your profile in ways that make it more likely to appear as a suggestion under the search bar.
There are a number of things you can do to make yourself more discoverable on Instagram. Whether you have a brand profile you're trying to promote or you just want to snag a few more followers, here are some tips on how to optimize your profile for search.
Put keywords in your display name and handle
One of the first things you should do, as the marketing platform Hubspot suggests(Opens in a new tab), is to think about the keywords you want your profile to market. Ask yourself, "What are people going to type into the search bar to find the things I'm marketing?" For example, if your profile is for a tattoo shop (or if you're an individual tattoo artist), you would want to have "tattoo" somewhere in both your display name and your "handle" (your username beginning with @).
When I type "tattoo shop" into the Instagram search bar, all of the top account results have "tattoo" in their display name, and most of them have "tattoo" (or some variation of it) somewhere in their handle. @livebytheswordtattoo(Opens in a new tab) appears as a high-ranking result partly because their account is optimized, but also, to be clear, because someone I follow also follows them, which may play a hand in which accounts appear in searches by networks of people.
The account results when I search "tattoo shop" on InstagramCredit: screenshot: instagram
Having keywords in the most important places on your Insta page is a useful first step in optimizing it for search.
Hashtag your posts
If you have any hope of somebody stumbling across your profile, you gotta (gotta gotta gotta) hashtag your posts. Hashtags are one of the primary ways Instagram gears its search results and allows people to follow and discover the things they're interested in.
Continuing with our tattoo example, if you're a shop or an artist trying to get your work out there, you'd want to hashtag your posts with #tattoo. Keep in mind, the broader the hashtag, the broader the audience searching for it will be — and therefore, the more search results you'll be competing with.
Broad hashtags are still good! You'll reach a huge audience that way. The problem is, you might get buried in other posts with the same hashtag, which is why we recommend using multiple hashtags of varying levels of specificity.
Let's say you have a tattoo of a flower you want to show off. Consider hashtagging your post with #tattoo (to reach a wide audience) and #flowertattoo (to reach a more specific audience).
The top results when I search "flower tattoo" on InstagramCredit: screenshot: instagram
When I search "flower tattoo" on Instagram, the first nine out of the 12 top results have #flowertattoo in their posts. The other three have flower emoji in their captions, which may hint at the role emoji play in driving up post interactions. We'll get to that in the next tip.
Captions
Your post captions are another key area where you can optimize your profile. In a 2019 study from the social analytics platform Quintly(Opens in a new tab) reported on by Social Media Today(Opens in a new tab), researchers looked at how things like caption length, hashtag usage, and even emoji usage affected post interactions among Instagram users big and small.
Length
The study found that for bigger profiles, with more than a million followers, posts with no captions received the highest engagement. For smaller profiles (between 1,000 and 10,000 followers), caption lengths between one and 50 characters saw the highest amount of interactions. So if you're a smaller profile, caption your posts, but keep it short and sweet. For even smaller accounts, with 1,000 followers or less, interactions were about even between small captions (between one and 50 characters) and large captions (300 or more characters).
Emoji usage
Now, let's talk emoji. The Quintly study found that whether your profile has over 10 million followers or less than 1,000 followers, captions with zero emoji tended to receive the least amount of interactions.
For small accounts, with less than 1,000 followers, captions using 10 emoji or more resulted in the highest number of interactions on average, although captions containing anywhere between one and 10 emoji were not far behind.
For larger accounts, with between 10,000 and 100,000 followers, captions with four to 10 emoji saw the highest average interactions, though emoji usage outside that range also saw a high level of interactions — except captions with zero emoji.
The takeaway? Whether you're a big or small profile, use emoji in your captions, dammit. And if you're a small account with less than a 1,000 followers, maybe go crazy and use 10 or more emoji?
Hashtag usage
When looking at hashtag usage, the study found that larger profiles tended to get their highest engagement when their posts included zero hashtags. Why? We don't know for sure. But we imagine that if you're Ariana Grande, you probably don't need to use hashtags to get high levels of engagement with your posts. If you're Ariana Grande and you have the specific goal of getting the highest Insta engagement you can, it's probably best to not use any hashtags.
We can also probably safely assume that most of you reading this are, in fact, not Ariana Grande. In that case, if you have less than 1,000 followers, use hashtags and use a lot of 'em. The study found that these smaller accounts saw their highest level of engagement when they used 10 or more hashtags in their posts.
The data does get a little peculiar in the mid-range-sized accounts. Accounts with between 10,000 and 100,000 followers also saw their highest level of engagement when using 10+ hashtags. However, small (but not the smallest) accounts, with between 1,000 and 10,000 followers, saw their highest engagement when they used a modest one to three hashtags. Accounts with 100,000 followers or more saw their highest engagement when using zero hashtags.
The best advice we can offer is to consider the size of your account and determine your hashtag usage based on that.

Use your bio
Don't leave it blank! Hubspotalso suggests using "secondary keywords" in your bio(Opens in a new tab). Think about what else people will be searching for that goes along with what you're trying to market.
What else would people be searching that relates to tattoos? "Piercings," perhaps? "Shops" to schedule appointments at? Maybe including your city/region will help capture the audience closest to you! Let's look at @livebytheswordtattoo(Opens in a new tab) again.

Looking at their bio, we can see that they include "tattoo," "piercing," and "shop," utilizing both primary and secondary keywords to help drive their search optimization.
They also include NYC in their display name, and they put both Williamsburg and Brooklyn in their bio. This, of course, tells users where they do their business, but it also outlines a broad area as well as a specific neighborhood where they're most likely to capture the audience they're after.
Post content! Then check your "likes" and "views"
The best way we learn is by practicing, right? So if you're unsure about what's working and what's not, how about some trial and error?
Post your content using different techniques. Play around with the length of your captions. Try adding another keyword to your profile. Use more emoji. Use less emoji. Use more hashtags. Use less hashtags. And then see what happens!
Which pictures get more likes and comments? Which videos get more views? What do your posts with the highest number of likes have in common?
We can learn a lot about what works by just giving it the ol' college try and seeing what happens next. It's kind of like running your own personal "study" to help you learn which things are optimizing your Instagram.
And, if you have a "creator" or "business" Instagram account, you can access "insights" to see more detailed info about your post interactions and metrics(Opens in a new tab).
You have a good set of tools to help you optimize your account and track the results. So get out there and build those profiles and get those interactions! We'll be here rooting for you.
USWNTs historic win has Twitter asking why theyre paid less than men
The U.S. women's national team won 13-0 against Thailand in their first match in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup on Tuesday. In light of their incredible victory -- it was a record win in both men's and women's World Cup history -- people want to know why they're paid so much less than the men's national team.
Player Alex Morgan alone managed to score a record five times during the match. To put the team's 13 goals into perspective, the U.S. men's national team scored 12 in their last three World Cup attempts combined.
So yeah, this is pretty freaking impressive.

The USWNT actively wins more than the men's team, but they're still fighting for equal pay. In 2016, they were given raises after filing a complaint(Opens in a new tab) with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, but despite the collective bargaining, they still weren't paid as much as the men's team.
The complaint noted that the women's team generated almost $20 million more in revenue than the men's team did in 2015, but the women's team was paid(Opens in a new tab) a quarter of what the men's salary was.
The women's team escalated(Opens in a new tab) the fight for equal pay this year and sued the U.S. Soccer Federation — on International Women's Day, to really drive in the point — for "institutional gender discrimination." The Federation argued that the two teams are paid differently because they're "performing different work ... that require different obligations and responsibilities."
"Performing different work," apparently, means breaking World Cup records when the men's team didn't qualify(Opens in a new tab) for the 2018 World Cup. Twitter users couldn't get over the win.

Ticketmaster issues formal apology to Taylor Swift and her fans for Eras Tour fiasco

For those who haven't been following the chaos, here's a brief rundown. Ticketmaster canceled the general sale of tickets to Swift's first tour since 2018 this past Thursday after rescheduling the Capital One cardholder sale. On top of that, the service was unprepared to deal with the volume of fans trying to purchase tickets through the Verified Fan presale this past Monday. The Ticketmaster website crashed ahead of the Verified Fan presale and fans endured hours-long queues with some getting an error message when they finally reached the front of the line.
"We estimate about 15% of interactions across the site experienced issues, and that’s 15% too many, including passcode validation errors that caused fans to lose tickets they had carted," the press release reads.

Ticketmaster blamed "unprecedented traffic" on the site due to bots and fans without presale codes for the issues with the site during the Verified Fan presale.
In their lengthy statement, Ticketmaster runs through the numbers that informed their approach to the Eras Tour. It reports that 3.5 million people registered for the Verified Fan presale — the largest registration in its history. Around 1.5 million fans received presale codes and 2 million tickets were sold during the Verified Fan presale breaking their record for the most tickets sold in a day.
